May Adult Programming

In May, the library will offer programming based on the All Iowa Reads book, Lila, by Marilynne Robinson. Set during the Great Depression, Lila is a homeless woman who finds a home, love, and redemption. The exciting programs we have planned are;
·         The DIY Club will be digging in the dirt to make an herb tower. We will glue together flower pots and plant different herbs for our tower. This is a great way to have fresh herbs at your fingertips!
·         Bill Jamerson, historian and songwriter, will present Dollar-A Day-Boys, a musical tribute to the Civilian Conservation Corps. Over 3.5 million men enlisted in the corps including around 200 men at Camp Spencer located for six months at the Clay County Fairgrounds. Dollar-A-Day Boys is full of hilarious stories and foot tapping songs that make it a “must see” experience!
·         To tie into the homeless theme in the book Lila, we will be watching the movie, Lady in the Van starring Maggie Smith. Lady in the Van is a British comedy, drama, and biography. It is based on a true story about a woman who “temporarily” parks her van in the drive of an English playwright – and stays for 15 years.
·         To end our All Iowa Reads programming, we will discuss the book Lila.
The Book Into Movie Club will read, and then watch in June, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape written by Peter Hedges. Gilbert Grape (Johnny Depp), of Endora, Iowa, is a small-town young man with a lot of responsibility. Chief among his concerns are his mother, who is so overweight that she can't leave the house, and his mentally impaired younger brother, Arnie (Leonardo DiCaprio), who has a knack for finding trouble. Gilbert finally has his life shaken up by the free-spirited Becky (Juliette Lewis). With the physical and mental health issues so thoughtfully portrayed, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? is the perfect movie to watch in June during our Exercise Your Mind: Read adult Summer Reading Program. So, read the book in May and then watch the movie in June.

April Adult Programming

Happy Spring everyone! You can use the extended daylight hours as an opportunity to visit the library. Take a look at the wonderful adult programs planned for this month.
The library will show the movie Brooklyn starring Saoirse Ronan. The movie was nominated for best picture and best actress and tells the tale of a young Irish Immigrant coming to New York in the 1950s. She falls in love with a man from New York but, she also meets and falls in love with another man while visiting Ireland. Torn between two countries and two loves, she has to make a hard choice.  The movies are always free at the library – with snacks!
The DIY Club will be decorating corner bookmarks. Join us as we turn colorful paper into a variety of cute and useful book accessories from animals to creative designs.  Warning: You will become addicted to this craft.
The Book To Movie Club will watch the movie Sense and Sensibility starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet. Based on the Jane Austen classic novel, Sense and Sensibility is a 1995 movie about two sisters, finding love, one following her brain and the social norms of early 1800s England and one following her heart to the possible detriment of her character. If you haven’t read the book, no problem, you can still see the movie.
Our next Book To Movie is What’s Eating Gilbert Grape by Peter Hedges. What's eating Gilbert Grape is just about everything and everybody in Endora, Iowa--his mother, who has been eating herself to death since his father's suicide; his Elvis-fanatic sister who is following her example; his little sister Ellen, the town beauty; and his mentally disabled brother Arnie. This is a heartwarming, exhilarating debut novel by a very gifted young writer.  We will watch the film starring Johnny Depp, Juliette Lewis, and a young Leonardo DiCaprio as Arnie in June.
