It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

The holidays are upon us, and what better gift to give a child than a wonderful story.  Here are a few of my favorite picture books from 2014 that would make curling up with your little ones on cold, wintery nights for storytime extra-special.
First off is The Pout-Pout Fish Goes to School by Deborah Diesen.  In the original Pout-Pout Fish book, our hero learns that it’s better to spread cheer than dreariness in a repetitive, fun to read aloud rhyming verse.  In the latest installment, we take a look back to when the Pout-Pout Fish was a little guy just starting school and was full of fear and doubt about his abilities.  He soon learns that everyone has the potential to learn and grow if they start small and have confidence in themselves.  This would be a great addition to the library of a child just starting school or undertaking a new hobby.
Next I’d like to recommend Mix It Up! or any other title by HervĂ© Tullet.  Tullet made a splash a couple of years ago with his best-selling, interactive picture book Press Here.  My own children and I have spent many an evening reading and re-reading  Press Here which encourages children to press the dot, shake the book, clap, and many other actions before turning the page to see what happens.  Mix It Up! brings back the interactive storyline in order to teach kids about mixing colors.  My family also owns another by this author called The Scribble Book which actually encourages kids to scribble on the pages in order to create beautiful art…perfect for my own little scribbler.
Finally I would like to tell you about Kid Sheriff and the Terrible Toads by Bob Shea.  This book is HILARIOUS!  7-year-old Sheriff Ryan rides into town (slowly…on a tortoise) and uses his uncanny knowledge of dinosaurs to apprehend the theiven’, hootin’ & hollerin’, cattle-smoochin’ Toad Brothers.  Brush up on your cowboy voice for this one and share it with a cowboy fan in early elementary grades.  Another great title from this same author is Unicorn Thinks He’s Pretty Great.
These were just a few of my favorites this year.  If you’d like a few more recommendations, stop in and ask and be sure to pick up enough books to keep you and your families warm and entertained during these long, cold nights.  Happy holidays everyone!

There will be NO Baby Storytime on Monday, December 1st, due to Spencer's Grand Meander activities. Baby Storytime will be held, as usual, next Monday night, December 8th at 6:30 pm.

Grand Meander at Spencer Public Library

Stop into the library during Grand Meander on December 1st for cookies, crafts, and cocoa!
Bring your children to decorate cookies, get crafty with a cute felt ornament and make Christmas cards to give to our homebound patrons.
While the children are having fun, all ages can enjoy our hot chocolate bar.

Read, Watch, Enjoy The Total Experience

Grand Meander

5:00 to 8:00 PM, Monday, December 1st.

December Adult Programming

Take a break from the holidays and stop by the library for some wonderful programs and hot cocoa! That’s right; we will be offering a hot cocoa bar during the Grand Meander. So stop by and fix yourself something warm and sweet to drink.
DIY Club is back and we have a great project planned – Thumbprint Christmas Ornaments. These ornaments are really adorable and all it takes is a thumb, some paint, and a sharpie.
Our food loving director is putting on another Simply Delicious food course for December- a Cookie Exchange. So, bring a cookie (with the recipe) to share and a container to put your cookies in. Mandie will make two cookies of her own for everyone to bring home.
We will be showing Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie for our December Adult Movie. A vengeful fairy is driven to curse an infant princess, only to discover that the child may be the one person who can restore peace to their troubled land.
In December, the Book Into Movie Club will be watching The Heart is a Lonely Hunter starring Alan Arkin. This is a heart wrenching story about a deaf mute man in 1930’s Georgia.  All are welcome to watch the movie (even if you didn’t read the book). Our next Book Into Movie is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.  After a harsh childhood, orphan Jane Eyre is hired by Edward Rochester, the brooding lord of a mysterious manor house to care for his young daughter.
Have a safe and happy Holiday Season!
